Learn about the Dead Sea Scrolls March 10
Learn about the Dead Sea Scrolls and why they are so important at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2011 at Gustavus Adolphus College. The lecture will be presented by Alex Jassen whose research and teaching concentrates on the Dead Sea Scrolls and ancient Judaism. He is also a member of the international editorial team for the Dead Sea Scrolls and has written the book Mediating the Divine: Prophesy and Revelation in the Dead Sea Scrolls and Second Temple Judaism.
Annual African Night March 4
African Night, a celebration to learn about African culture, music, food, and clothing, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2011 in Gustavus Adolphus College's Alumni Hall, located in O.J. Johnson Student Union. The event is free and open to the public. This an annual event is sponsored by the Pan-Afrikan Student Organization (PASO).
Changing Food World Lecture March 2
Author and professor Psyche Williams-Forson will visit Gustavus on Wednesday, March 2, 2011. Her lecture, titled "Bet Your Bottom Dollar: Expanding the Concept of Alternatives in a Changing Food World, is part of Gustavus's Global Insight 2010-2011 program on food and will be at 7 p.m. in F.W. Olin Hall, room 103. The lecture will discuss dollar stores, and other similar “value markets,” as a way to broaden the discussion of concepts like “sustainability” and “food access.”
VIDEO: A Sustainable Advantage
Gustavus is a place that truly wants to make a difference in the world. One way the institution and its community members do that is in the area of food and sustainability. Online there's a new, unsolicited video story featuring Gustavus Adolphus College's sustainability efforts in the food/dining area, which was done by the St. Paul-based non-profit organization Minnesota 2020.
Building Bridges Conference March 12
Gustavus Adolphus College will host its 16th annual Building Bridges conference on Saturday, March 12, 2011. This year’s conference, with the theme “I’m Not For Sale: Slavery Past and Present,” will provide an opportunity for attendees to engage in dialogue about the effects of the slave trade from a historical perspective as well as from a modern-day one.
Weekend Fine Arts Events
Following successful winter concert tours, the Gustavus Wind Orchestra and the Gustavus Choir will present their Home Concerts on Saturday, Feb. 12 in Christ Chapel at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively.Both concerts are free and open to the public. There's also a USAF Brass concert on Sunday, Feb. 13.
Food Security Event Feb. 12-13
Gustavus Adolphus College, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, and Feed My Starving Children are collaborating on a large-scale food security awareness event to occur Feb. 12-13.
Gustavus Receives Donation to Help Fund NYSP
Gustavus Adolphus College President Jim Peterson was recently presented a $5,000 check by the HickoryTech Foundation to help fund the College's National Youth Sports Program (NYSP). This summer's NYSP at Gustavus will be a three-week (July 9-28) academic and athletic enrichment program for approximately 150 youth ages 10-16 from low-income families living within a 45-mile radius of St. Peter.
Gustavus Choir of Christ Chapel Announces Concert Tour
The Gustavus Adolphus College Choir of Christ Chapel will set out on a three-day concert tour Friday, April 20 to Sunday, April 22. The choir will also sing a home concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 27 in Christ Chapel.
Christmas in Christ Chapel Broadcasts
Broadcasts of Gustavus Adolphus College's 2005 Christmas in Christ Chapel service, "Ageless Visions of a Timeless Moment," will be aired throughout southern Minnesota during the holiday season on a variety of radio stations.
