Food Security Lecture March 11

Frederick L. Kirschenmann, a professor, philosopher, writer, and farmer, will lecture from 2:30-4 p.m. March 11, 2011 in Gustavus's F.W. Olin Hall, room 103 on the topic of “Food Security in a Changing World: Expanding the Vision of Sustainable Agriculture.” This lecture, which is free and open to the public, is part of the 2010-2011 Gustavus Global Insight on Food.

“Remember Me” Exhibit on Display

A traveling gallery of interactive artwork from Colombia, titled “Remember Me: Voices of the Silenced,” will be on display at Gustavus from March 14-25, 2011, in the Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library. The artwork testifies to the struggles of thousands of innocent victims of violence during the past 50 years in Colombia. The exhibit will open with a free, public lecture at 7 p.m. Monday, March 14 in Alumni Hall, located in the O.J. Johnson Student Union.

Big Partner/Little Partner Program Receives Grant

The Big Partner/Little Partner program at Gustavus Adolphus College is the recipient of a Timberwolves FastBreak Foundation's $5,000 grant. An on-court presentation of this "New Season, New Beginnings"-themed grant will occur at 7 p.m. Monday, March 7, 2011 at the Target Center when the Timberwolves take on the Dallas Mavericks.

Canceled: WinterRead Author Event for March 8

Canceled: The 8th Annual WinterRead, sponsored by Unity in Community/St. Peter Reads, featuring author Stanley Gordon West and his book Blind Your Ponies. Due to ill health, West will NOT visit St. Peter Tuesday, March 8, 2011. His entire book tour has been canceled.

Women’s Hockey Claims Season Title

The Gustavus women’s hockey team continued its winning ways on Saturday night, Feb. 26, with an 8-1 win over Augsburg. With the win, the Gusties claimed their 7th straight MIAC regular season title (with a record of 14-2-2) and earned a #1 seed in the MIAC Playoffs (with home ice advantage for Thursday's second round playoff game).

Women Leadership Conference Announced

The first annual Gustavus Women in Leadership conference, "Women Discovering Leadership," will be held Friday, April 8, 2011. The keynote speaker will be Susan Madsen, Ph.D., author and expert on women in leadership. Following Madsen's speech, attendees will have the opportunity to choose 2 of the 6 breakout sessions available. Topics include: Career Advice for Female Students, The Importance of Mentoring in the Real World, Using Your College Connections to Network, a CEO Panel, an Entrepreneurs Panel, and Communication and Gender. The closing speaker will be Nancy Johnson Dahl '83, CEO of LifeTouch Studios. Tickets are required (at $15 for students, $25 for Gustavus employees, and $30 for general admission) and are available through gustavustickets.com.

Learn about the Dead Sea Scrolls March 10

Learn about the Dead Sea Scrolls and why they are so important at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2011 at Gustavus Adolphus College. The lecture will be presented by Alex Jassen whose research and teaching concentrates on the Dead Sea Scrolls and ancient Judaism. He is also a member of the international editorial team for the Dead Sea Scrolls and has written the book Mediating the Divine: Prophesy and Revelation in the Dead Sea Scrolls and Second Temple Judaism.

Origami Master to Lecture Locally and in the Twin Cities

Robert J. Lang, who is serving as the 2010-2011 Rydell Professor at Gustavus will return to the area the week of March 7 for a series of public lectures and classroom visits. On March 7, from 7-9 p.m., he will give a Gallery Talk in the Hillstrom Museum of Art as a part of the exhibition of his works. On March 8, at 7 p.m., he will present lecture on campus. And, at 7 p.m., March 10 he will lecture at the Science Museum of Minnesota.

Forensics Team Dominates at State Championships

At the 2011 Minnesota Collegiate Forensics Association State Championships, the Gustavus forensics team won the individual events portion and placed second overall. Competing against 12 other schools at the Feb. 19-20 tournament, the Gustavus team dominated the individual events, placing first in 7 of the 11 events. Senior Orator Phil Helt qualified to represent Minnesota at the 2011 Interstate Oratorical Association National Contest, the nation's oldest speaking competition.

Annual African Night March 4

African Night, a celebration to learn about African culture, music, food, and clothing, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2011 in Gustavus Adolphus College's Alumni Hall, located in O.J. Johnson Student Union. The event is free and open to the public. This an annual event is sponsored by the Pan-Afrikan Student Organization (PASO).
