The non-profit organization Invisible Children will screen its latest documentary, “The Rescue: Of Joseph Kony’s Child Soliders,” at Gustavus Adolphus College at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 8 in Alumni Hall, located in the College’s O.J. Johnson Student Union.
The Invisible Children organization was started in 2003 after three California college students traveled to Africa and witnessed the atrocities of a civil war playing out in Uganda. In addition to the thousands of people who were murdered, a man named Joseph Kony, leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), was kidnapping children and brainwashing them to be child soldiers. The conflict continues and it has spilled over into the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Sudan.
Invisible Children asserts itself as a non-profit working to transform apathy into activism. By documenting the lives of those living in regions of conflict, the organization hopes to educate and inspire individuals in the Western world to use their voice to compel change.
“The Rescue” profiles Kony — the world’s first individual indicted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity — and the untold story of child soldiers under his reign. The film will be released to the public on April 25.
The screening of “The Rescue” is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by the Gustavus and St. Peter chapters of Amnesty International. For more information, contact Amnesty International co-president Dain Clausen via e-mail at dclausen@gustavus.edu.
