Gustavus President Jack R. Ohle received the Charles W.L. Foreman Award at The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) 2014 State Funds Annual Conference on Monday, April 28 in Chicago, Ill. The Foreman Award recognizes a college president or corporate trustee who has demonstrated an outstanding record of service that truly distinguishes the recipient from his or her peers in support of the mission and work of the State Funds.
Prior to assuming the presidency of Gustavus in 2008, Ohle served as president of Wartburg College for ten years and previously served both Drake University and Nebraska Wesleyan University as their chief advancement officer. At each institution, President Ohle had a leadership role with the affiliated State Funds, including the Nebraska Independent College Foundation, the Iowa College Foundation, and the Minnesota Private College Fund. In addition, Ohle served on the board of the Foundation for Independent Higher Education (FIHE), which merged into CIC in 2010, and he assisted with the transition by serving a three-year term on CIC’s FIHE Advisory Council.
The Award is named in honor of Charles W.L. Foreman, who served as president of the UPS Foundation and chair of the board of FIHE. He was a driving force behind the gift from UPS that created the CIC-FIHE Endowment. The Endowment has provided more than $55 million in support of State Fund scholarship programs and collaborative projects benefitting private institutions.
“It is an honor to be recognized as the recipient of this year’s Foreman Award,” President Ohle said. “As I prepare to retire on July 1 and look back on my 44-year career in private higher education, it gives me great pride to know that my work at the institutions I served helped many students realize their dream of earning a college degree.”
