Gustavus Library Associates (GLA) will host its fourth annual Books in Bloom event at the Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library on May 2-4. The event is free and open to the public.
Books in Bloom is a distinctive event that highlights books, media, technology, and other resource material within the library through floral arrangements and artistic expression. This year’s event will feature 26 different “blooms” that will be arranged and spread throughout the first two floors of the library. Blooms are sponsored by individuals, families, book clubs, foundations, and organizations and are designed by professional florists, master gardeners, or friends with a knack for creativity.
This year’s event will bring insight into such books and films as the classic folk tale Cinderella, Solomon Northrop’s Twelve Years a Slave, Gustavus professor Matt Rasmussen’s award-winning collection of poems Black Aperture, and Tori Murden McClure’s A Pearl in the Storm—the book that served as the College’s Reading-in-Common selection for 2013.
This year’s Books in Bloom event will be on display from 3 to 6 p.m. on Friday, May 2; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 3; and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 4.
GLA is a friends-of-the-college organization dedicated to the support and advancement of the College’s Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library. Since organizing in 1977, GLA has raised more than $2.5 million for the library endowment fund, acquisitions, and non-budgeted special collections.
