Jay Walljasper Coming to Gustavus April 5

Popular speaker, veteran communications strategist, and award-winning writer and editor Jay Walljasper will speak publically at Gustavus Adolphus College on Tuesday, April 5.

Walljasper will give a short talk during the College’s daily worship service in Christ Chapel at 10 a.m. and then deliver a more substantial lecture about his latest book All That We Share: A Field Guide to the Commons at 7 p.m. in the Heritage Room, located on the upper level of the C. Charles Jackson Campus Center.

Walljapser chronicles stories from around the world that point us toward a greener, more equitable and more enjoyable future. He covers a wide variety of topics, with particular specialties in community and urban issues, travel, sustainability, cultural commentary, and the commons. He is editor of OnTheCommons.org, a citizens’ network that highlights the importance of the commons and promotes innovative commons-based solutions to create a brighter future. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Project for Public Spaces, a New York-based organization that helps citizens enliven their communities by improving public places.

Walljasper is also the author of the books The Great Neighborhood Book and Visionaries: People and Ideas to Change Your Life. His articles have been published around the world in publications such as the San Francisco Chronicle, Chicago Tribune, L.A. Weekly, Sunday Independent (South Africa), The Idler (UK), Outra Politica (Brazil) and Bikesmiling (Taiwan).

Walljasper has been an invited speaker at the UNESCO International Conference on Creative Tourism; the Chicago Architectural Foundation; the Great Places Conference sponsored by the state of Iowa; The Tom McCall Society Lecture in Portland; the “What’s the Economy For” Conference in Washington, D.C.; the Meredith Lecture on Communications at Drake University; the Smart Growth Summit in the Louisville area; and the Mayor’s Symposium on Sustainability in Winnipeg.
