Margaret Anderson Kelliher, a 1990 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College and current Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives, received the Democratic Farmer Labor party endorsement for governor on Saturday night in Duluth at the party’s convention.

The endorsement means that Anderson Kelliher will likely face-off against either State Rep. Marty Seifert or State Rep. Tom Emmer of the Republican Party of Minnesota in the November election to replace outgoing Governor Tim Pawlenty. The Republican Party of Minnesota will endorse their candidate next weekend.

Anderson Kelliher is attempting to become the fourth Gustavus graduate to be elected Governor of Minnesota. Adolph Olson Eberhart, a 1895 graduate of the College, served as Governor from 1909 to 1915. Luther Youngdahl, a 1919 graduate of the College, served as Governor from 1947 to 1951. Harold Levander, a 1932 graduate of the College, served as Governor from 1967 to 1971.

Anderson Kelliher is the first woman backed by a major-party for the state’s highest elected office. She is seeking to become the first female governor of Minnesota.
