The 12th annual Hunger and Homelessness Week is underway at Gustavus Adolphus College and will run through Thursday, Nov. 19.
The signature event of Gustavus’ Hunger and Homelessness Week is the annual “Sleep Out,” where Gustavus students simulate the experiences of homeless people by sleeping outside in cardboard boxes without returning to their residence hall rooms or apartments, going without showering, and eating only food that others provide. The Sleep Out began Sunday night.
Hunger and Homelessness Week is sponsored by Gustavus’s Action Supporting All People (ASAP). The event is held in conjunction with National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, which runs from Nov. 15-21.
The annual Hunger Banquet will take place at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19 in the Board Room. An R.S.V.P. is required to attend the banquet. Gustavus’s chapter of Amnesty International is also holding a food drive this week. Food donations can be dropped off in marked boxes in the Market Place and near the Community Service Center in the O.J. Johnson Student Union.
