Major Blizzard to Close Campus on Feb. 22-23Up to 24 inches of snow and 35-45 MPH winds are expected.

The blizzard may bring up to 24 inches of snow to the area.

A potentially historic winter storm will lead to impossible travel by Wednesday night and Thursday morning, if not sooner. Out of an abundance of caution, the College will close from noon on Wednesday, Feb. 22 through Friday, Feb. 24 at 6 a.m., and all on-campus events will be canceled.

A winter storm warning is in effect from 3 p.m. Tuesday through noon Wednesday. Additionally, a blizzard warning will be in effect from noon Wednesday through 6 p.m. Thursday.

Two rounds of snow are expected. The first arrived today and will taper off early Wednesday. Accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are expected in round one. Round two is more widespread, and will begin Wednesday afternoon and continue into Thursday, with an additional 8 to 18 inches expected. Total snow accumulations will range from 14 to 24 inches.

The worst conditions will be Wednesday evening through Thursday evening. Heavy snow will combine with wind gusts between 35 mph and 45 mph in western and central Minnesota. This will lead to significant blowing and drifting snow with whiteout conditions in open areas. Some drifts may be several feet deep, making travel nearly impossible.

Employees with weather-essential responsibilities will need to report to campus if they are safely able to do so. Some roads or access points around campus may need to be closed as weather conditions dictate, and the College’s snow removal staff will not be able to clear all sidewalks.

  • All classes between noon Wednesday and Thursday evening have been canceled. Students have been instructed to check email and class Moodle sites for communications from instructors regarding whether class sessions before noon Wednesday will be held virtually or canceled.
  • The College will officially be closed from Wednesday at noon through Thursday at 11:59 p.m. The College is planning to resume normal operations Friday morning, weather conditions permitting, and the community should plan for travel conditions on and around campus to remain difficult through Friday.
  • All on-campus events from Wednesday at noon through Thursday evening are canceled.
  • All campus buildings except Jackson Campus Center and the residence halls will be closed between Wednesday at noon and Friday at 6 a.m. This includes the Library, the Lund Center, and all academic and administration buildings.
  • Food service will be available for everyone on campus, although menu options may be limited. Dining Service/MarketPlace hours will remain as scheduled unless staffing shortages force a change. The STEAMery and Courtyard Café are likely to be closed for all or part of this storm event.

The College will continue to monitor conditions closely and make adjustments and announcements as needed. Watch your email for further communication and updates.

Everyone is strongly encouraged to stay indoors and avoid any travel on or off campus. If you must go outside, please wear appropriate winter footwear and clothing, allow extra time, and exercise caution when walking on campus. Please limit unnecessary travel and remain aware of changing weather conditions.
