The Nobel Conference: A 50-Year Tradition for Two Friends

Year after year friends Bruce Gray and Bill Harvey have sat side by side as preeminent scholars and researchers have taken them from the tiniest corners of the Earth to the farthest reaches of the universe. Thanks to the renowned Nobel Conference, held every October at Gustavus, the two friends have been to the bottom of the ocean and inside the human brain. They’ve mapped the path of a virus and learned about the legacy of Albert Einstein.

Presidential Inauguration Events Planned

Gustavus Adolphus College will inaugurate Rebecca M. Bergman as its 17th president at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3 in Christ Chapel. The public is invited to celebrate this event along with a reception in Lund Center that will follow the investiture ceremony at 4 p.m.

Nobel Conference Presenter to Speak at Science Museum of Minnesota

Sir Harry Kroto, the 1996 Nobel laureate in Chemistry and a vocal proponent of increased STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education for today’s youth, will speak at the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5.

The 50th Nobel Conference: “Where Does Science Go from Here?”

Gustavus Adolphus College will celebrate a half century of bringing breakthrough science to lay audiences in the upper Midwest when it hosts the 50th annual Nobel Conference on Oct. 7-8. This year’s Conference is titled “Where Does Science Go from Here?” and will feature 11 invited speakers who have all spoken at previous Nobel Conferences.

Gusties to Take Part in People’s Climate March in NYC

Just two and a half weeks into the academic year, nine Gustavus Adolphus College students have been busy organizing and preparing to make a trip to New York City for the People’s Climate March on Sunday, Sept. 21. The group of Gustavus students will join more than 1,400 partnering organizations at the march, including businesses, unions, religious groups, environmental groups, schools, social justice groups, and more to collectively stand up for environmental justice.

Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theater to Perform at Gustavus

The Minneapolis-based Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theater will present “Echoes of Spain” at Gustavus Adolphus College at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12 in Alumni Hall. The show is part of an eight-stop tour sponsored by the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Nursing Student Reaps the Benefits of Summer Internship at HCMC

After three years of coursework and clinical experiences through the Nursing Department at Gustavus Adolphus College, senior Molly Ashwill was looking for a summer internship last spring that would allow her to gain more experience in the clinical setting. Ashwill found what she was looking for through the Hennepin County Medical Center’s (HCMC) Student Nurse Internship Program and is now setting her sights on graduating this spring and joining the workforce.

Hillstrom Museum Opens Season with Pull Left–Not Always Right

The Hillstrom Museum of Art at Gustavus Adolphus College will open its 2014-15 season of exhibitions with Pull Left—Not Always Right: Emerging Contemporary Artists in China. The exhibition will be on view Sept. 22 through Nov. 9, 2014, with an opening reception starting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 22.
