Rev. Dr. Jamie Washington
The Rev. Dr. Jamie Washington, president and founder of both the Washington Consulting Group in Baltimore and the Social Justice Training Institute, will give the 2015 Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Lecture at Gustavus Adolphus College at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19 in Christ Chapel. Dr. Washington’s lecture is titled “50 Years Later, The Work Continues: Living the Legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King In Our Own Time.”

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Lecture is an annual event on the Gustavus campus that has previously drawn prominent speakers such as Taylor Branch, Diane Nash, the Rev. C.T. Vivian, and Bernard Lafayette Jr.
Dr. Washington has served as an educator, administrator, and consultant in higher education for more than 30 years. In 1992 he founded the Washington Consulting Group, which provides workshops, coaching, consulting and keynote talks on a variety of topics including organizational and culture change management, effective leadership and team building, diversity and inclusion development, conflict resolution, diversity strategic planning, and engaging religion, spirituality, sexuality, race, gender and other identities.
In 1998, Dr. Washington co-founded the Social Justice Training Institute, which provides a forum for the professional and personal development of social justice educators and practitioners to enhance and refine their skills and competencies to create greater inclusion for all members of the campus community.
Dr. Washington earned his bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation and music from Slippery Rock State College, masters’ degrees in higher education administration and counseling from Indiana University, and his Ph.D. in college student development from the University of Maryland. In addition, Dr. Washington holds a Master’s of Divinity degree from Howard University School of Divinity. He serves on the board of Many Voices, a black church movement for gay and transgender justice, as well as the boards of Campus Pride and Beyond Diversity. He has also served as Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs; an instructor in sociology, American studies, and education, and an assistant professor of women’s studies at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
Dr. Washington’s talk on Jan. 19 is free and open to the public and is co-sponsored by the Peace Studies Program and the Diversity Center.
