Five students and two student-led events will be recognized Wednesday, May 9 at the annual Paul Magnuson Student Leadership and Service Awards Program at Gustavus Adolphus College. The awards reception will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Heritage Banquet Room in the C. Charles Jackson Campus Center.

Established in 1991, and annually supported by the Hon. Paul Magnuson ’59, chief judge of the U.S. Federal District Court in St. Paul and former trustee of the College (1986-1993), the awards recognize the significant contributions that individual students and student groups make to campus life.

Each year, outstanding students, organizations, and events are nominated by fellow students, faculty, administrators, and staff for recognition. A selection committee assembled by the Dean of Students reviews nominations and determines honorees.

The following students and student-led events will be honored this year:

Elizabeth A. Coco – A senior religion and gender, women, and sexuality studies double major, Elizabeth was co-chair of the 2011 Building Bridges Conference and has also been involved in “I Am, We Are,” the Womyn’s Awareness Center, the White Privilege Conference delegation, and Breaking Barriers. She was a Gustie Greeter, serves on the Diversity Leadership council, is a member of student senate, and is on the Guild of St. Lucia.

Christopher C. Duhaime – A senior communication studies major, Chris has been involved in the Campus Activities Board (CAB) and the “It Gets Better” project. He is a member of the Gustavus Choir and has served as a Collegiate Fellow.

Brandon J. Hirdler – A senior history and gender, women, and sexuality studies double major, Brandon has been involved in Student Senate, Building Bridges, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He is also active in the Womyn’s Awareness Center.

Meghan K. Lee – A senior sociology and anthropology and gender, women, and sexuality studies double major, Meghan is involved in Gustie Greeters and Sigma Sigma Sigma. She has also served as Gustavus’s campus recruiter for Teach for America.

Irma Márquez Trapero – A senior political science and gender, women, and sexuality studies double major, Irma has been active in “I Am, We Are,” and Gustie Greeters and was the 2012 co-chair of Building Bridges. She is a member of the Zeta Chi Phi sorority and the Guild of St. Lucia, was co-president of the Pan African Student Organization and is a Phillips Scholar.

Brazilian Carnival – A celebration of Brazilian culture and traditions featuring Brazilian music, dancing, and food.

Gender Bender Campaign – A campaign aimed to expand personal perspectives on gender, to challenge gender stereotypes, to inspire people to truly be themselves, and to encourage self-identification outside of gender stereotypes.
