The Gustavus Adolphus College community will join the fight to stop rape, sexual assault, and gender violence on Wednesday, April 11 when it hosts a Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the John’s Family Courtyard.
The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event asks men to literally walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes, while engaging in conversations with other men and women about gender relations and sexual violence. The mission of the event is to create a unique and powerful public experience that educates individuals and communities about the causes of sexualized violence, provides them with prevention and remediation strategies, and empowers them to further develop and implement the knowledge and skills interpersonally and politically.
Walk a Mile in her Shoes was created by Frank Baird in 2001. What started out as a small group of men daring each other to totter around a park has grown to become a world-wide movement with tens of thousands of men raising millions of dollars for local rape crisis centers, domestic violence shelters, and other sexualized violence education, prevention, and remediation programs.
The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event at Gustavus is being sponsored by the Peer Assistants and M-PACT. Those interested in participating in this event should pre-register in the Peer Assistants Office any time before the event. There is no cost to participate in the event. A taco-in-a-bag dinner will be available at the end of the walk. For more information about this event, contact the Peer Assistants Office at 507-933-7607.
