Brazilian Carnival performer Dandara

An eclectic and impressive group of professional singers and dancers will appear at Gustavus on Sunday, Feb. 26 to help the College celebrate its first Brazilian Carnival event. Sponsored by the Organization of Latin American and Spanish Cultures (OLAS), this free event which is open to the public will take place between 6-9:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall.

Musician, singer, and bandleader Robert Everest, who annually organizes and directs the largest annual Brazilian celebration in the Twin Cities, is among those who will perform at the Gustavus Brazilian Carnival event. Performing an average of 150 to 200 shows a year, Everest has delighted audiences around the globe with his original compositions and his vast repertoire of acoustic World Music.

Joining Everest will be Brazilian native Dandara, an exuberant and dynamic singer who grew up in Bahia, Brazil where she sang with Carnival group Banda Relogio. She has performed at major festivals, including the Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, along with numerous Brazilian Carnival events throughout the United States.

Professional samba dancers Edilson Lima and Vanessa Luiz will also perform with elaborate costumes and incredible energy that is the trademark of Brazilian Carnival events. Gustavus Associate Professor of Anthropology Patric Giesler and his wife Leia will speak at the event. Attendees will also get a taste of Brazilian culture as traditional appetizers, food, and drinks will be served.

The event is also sponsored by the Diversity Center, the Crossroads Program, and the departments of Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies (LALACS) and Sociology and Anthropology.
