African Night, an annual celebration of African culture, music, food, and fashion, will be held from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Feb 24, in Alumni Hall at Gustavus Adolphus College.

This year’s celebration is based on the year-long theme of “Expanding Borders.” The night will include dances and musical performances from areas of Africa and Caribbean nations. Food will be prepared with influences from various regions of Pan Afrika, including Ethiopia and the Caribbean Islands. Along with fine arts and cuisine, there will be a fashion show in which students will wear traditional clothing representing the different African influences worldwide.

Besides performances from Gustavus students, other groups planning to perform at the event include the world-renowned Ghanian group Sakumu Dance Troupe, MSU Ethiopian Dance, Universal Dance Destiny, and a Sudanese dance team.

Last year the event attracted more than 450 visitors from throughout Minnesota, including St. Peter, Mankato, St. Cloud, and the Twin Cities. African Night is sponsored by the Pan-Afrikan Student Organization (PASO) – a student-led organization dedicated to embracing, teaching, and celebrating African culture through events hosted throughout the year. African Night is free and open to the public.
