The Gustavus Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Ruth Lin, will embark on an 8-day, 4-state tour of the Midwest during the College’s spring break, March 26-April 2, 2011.

Performance locales include North St. Paul, Rochester, and Eden Prairie in Minnesota, Cedar Rapids and Ames in Iowa, Omaha in Nebraska, and Sioux Falls in South Dakota.

The orchestra will play two works by Peter Tchaikovsky:  the Romeo and Juliet Overture and  the Symphony no. 2 in C minor, Op. 17, known as the “Little Russian.” The ensemble will also be a part of master classes at some of the high schools while on tour.

Why attend a tour performance?

“Because it’s great music played by people who love it,” says Conductor Lin. “And, I promise it will be fun!”

The complete tour schedule with listings of specific concert locations and times is online at  https://gustavus.edu/music/strings/touringschedule.php and also in a chart below.

Orchestra member Tia Thompson ’13 (percussion) is looking forward to the Midwest tour. “Tour provides us with a chance to grow musically as individuals and as an ensemble. Plus it is a unique way to bond with other members of the orchestra,” she says.

This is the first year the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra is under the direction of Dr. Lin. In the past, the ensemble has traveled to locations throughout the nation and abroad to China. The group is currently preparing for an international tour to South Africa in January 2012.

Following its return to Gustavus, the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra will present its annual Home Concert in Christ Chapel on Sunday April 10 at 1:30 p.m. This performance, like the concerts on the tour, is free and open to the public.
