The Gustavus Adolphus College forensics team placed sixth out of 47 teams at the prestigious L.E. Norton Memorial Tournament on Nov. 6-7 on the campus of Bradley University in Peoria, Ill.
Western Kentucky University took first place in the team sweepstakes, followed by George Mason University, Ohio University, University of Wisconsin-Eau Clare, and Illinois State University.
Gustavus finished in front of several traditionally strong programs including Arizona State University, Northwestern University, University of Texas at Austin, James Madison University, Kansas State University, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
In addition to a strong team showing, two individuals from Gustavus recorded first place finishes in their respective events. Senior Phil Helt won the Open Communication Analysis event, while first-year student Kelsey Abele won the Novice Program Oral Interpretation event.
Helt added a fourth place finish in Open Editorial Impromptu, while Abele finished second in Novice Poetry and fifth in Novice Prose. Junior Chloe Radcliffe placed third in both Open Drama and Open Program Oral Interpretation.
Other impressive performances included first-year student Kirsten Craft’s sixth place finish in Novice Persuasion and first-year student Dani Schwartz’s fifth place showing in Novice Program Oral Interpretation.
The team now has some time off before it competes in the Michael Nicolais Collegiate Forensics Tournament on Dec. 3-4 at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
