Howard Cohrt (1937-2010)

Gustavus Adolphus College Professor Emeritus of the Library Howard Cohrt passed away Friday, July 16 at the age of 73 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Professor Cohrt served as a librarian at the College from 1979 until 2002. He was also a founding member and longtime adviser of the Gustavus Phi Beta Kappa chapter.

A native of Waterloo, Iowa, Cohrt went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University in 1959, and later master’s degrees from Columbia University, the University of Minnesota, and Marquette University. Prior to coming to Gustavus in 1979, Cohrt taught religion, Latin, and history at several private boarding schools.

Cohrt is survived by his wife of 42 years, Altamira, his sons Geoff and Fred, his brother Larry, and his sister Connie. A funeral service was held Monday, July 19 at Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Peter. Burial will be held Tuesday, July 20 in Waterloo.
