The Epsilon Pi Alpha fraternity at Gustavus Adolphus College will host its annual Diabetes Awareness Week May 1-8 to benefit the nonprofit organization Insulindependence.
The week of events will begin with a benefit dinner and silent auction on Saturday, May 1 and will culminate with the Take The Hill Triathlon on the morning of Saturday, May 8.
The benefit dinner and silent auction on May 1 will take place from 4-7 p.m. in Alumni Hall, located on the upper level of the O.J. Johnson Student Union. The silent auction will run from 4-6 p.m. with dinner served at 5:45 p.m. Kerry Kuck, a blind, type one diabetic marathon runner will speak about the challenges of diabetes and the obstacles it poses to people who want to live a healthy, active lifestyle. Tickets for the event are $15 for adults and $12 for students. Those wishing to attend can RSVP by sending an e-mail to Casey Enevoldsen at cenevold@gustavus.edu.
The Take The Hill Triathlon will consist of a 500-yard swim in the Natatorium of the Lund Center for Physical Education and Health, a 12.5 mile bike ride through St. Peter and the surrounding countryside, and a 3.3 mile run through the Gustavus campus. More than 140 individuals and 15 relay teams are registered to take part in the event. Go online to gustietri.com for more information.

Insulindependence was founded in 2001 by Gustavus and Epsilon Pi Alpha alumnus Peter Nerothin. A nonprofit public benefit corporation based in San Diego, Calif., Insulindependence aims to change diabetic lives through adventure travel, educational outreach, and web-based community support. The organization operates through a global network of outdoor enthusiasts working together in an effort to promote healthy, proactive lifestyles to diabetics lacking financial resources, positive role models, and adequate guidance in professional healthcare.
