Alumna Sue Leaf to Speak at Spring Author Day Posted on March 24th, 2010 by

Sue Leaf '75

Freelance writer and 1975 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College Sue Leaf will speak at the Gustavus Library Associates’ (GLA) Spring Author Day at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 21 at the Edina Country Club. Leaf, who left Gustavus with a degree in biology, will speak about her latest book, The Bullhead Queen: A Year on Pioneer Lake.

The Bullhead Queen is a collection of engaging meditations on the places Leaf sees every day on Pioneer Lake. Acknowledging the influence of the church on her view of the natural world, she guides the reader through a year on the lake by featuring the changes of the seasons through nature and through the liturgical year as celebrated by nearby Chisago Lake Lutheran Church in Center City, Minn. The book is a finalist for a Minnesota Book Award in the Memoir & Creative Nonfiction category.

Leaf is also the author of the 2004 book Potato City: History, Nature, and Community in the Age of Sprawl. Her essays have appeared in Minnesota Monthly, Utne Reader, Minnesota Conservation Volunteer, and Architecture Minnesota. Leaf is married to Gustavus alumnus Tom Leaf ’75 and the mother of Gusties Andy ’05, Katy ’07, John ’09, and Christina ’12.

Guests are asked to R.S.V.P. by calling the Office of Marketing and Communication at 507-933-7550 or by visiting the GLA website at gustavus.edu/gla. The cost for the event is $22 per person and includes brunch and an opportunity to have a book signed by Leaf.

GLA is a friends-of-the-college organization dedicated to the support and advancement of the College’s Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library. Since organizing in 1977, GLA has raised more than 2.5 million for the library endowment fund, acquisitions, and non-budgeted special collections.
