The Choir of the West

The Choir of the West, a collegiate choral ensemble from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash., will appear in concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27 at Gustavus Adolphus College’s Christ Chapel. The concert is free and open to the pubilc.

The Choir of the West was established in 1926, and was the third Lutheran college choir to tour nationally, joining the tradition begun by the choirs at St. Olaf College and Concordia College (Moorhead, Minnesota). There have been six directors of the Choir of the West, including current conductor Richard Nance.

The 47-voice ensemble will present a varied program that will include works by Stephen Paulus, Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, William Walton, Maurice Ravel, F. Melius Christiansen and Moses Hogan, among others. Paul Tegels, professor of organ at Pacific Lutheran, will accompany.
