Laurent A. Parks Daloz will deliver a free public lecture at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27 in Alumni Hall, located in the O.J. Johnson Student Union.
Parks Daloz is the award-winning author of the book Effective Teaching and Mentoring. His lecture is titled “From Armored Boy to Wise Old Man: How Men Grow Up…Or Don’t — Men For the 21st Century.”
His visit is part of a College project called “Deep M-Pact: Mentoring Gustavus Men for Masculinities of Meaning and Making a Difference.” Gustavus is one of a small cohort of 15 colleges nationally to be selected to participate in this two-year initiative, which will support development of pilot projects and eventual publication of “best practices” to better engage college men in vocational reflection.
Parks Daloz also took part in a men’s overnight retreat along with Gustavus students and faculty members on Oct. 25-26 which focused on informing, motivating, and equipping male sophomore students to become campus leaders.
Co-founder and first academic dean of the Community College of Vermont, Parks Daloz subsequently served as a faculty member with Vermont College and Johnson State College. He later became an adult education professor at Lesley College and has also taught at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Columbia Teachers College.
This event is being sponsored by the Center for Vocational Reflection, Men’s Leadership Team, Dean of Students Office, Chaplain’s Office, President’s Office, GAC TV, and the Community Service Center.
