Global Insight Program to Host Teach-in on China Posted on September 4th, 2008 by

Gustavus Global Insight, a campus-wide themed learning program at Gustavus Adolphus College, will sponsor a teach-in on China from 1-4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11. The teach-in will take place in The Dive, located on the lower level of the O.J. Johnson Student Union.

The event will feature seven different 20-minute presentations by Gustavus faculty members on various topics concerning China, which is the Gustavus Global Insight focus topic for the 2008-09 academic year. The schedule is as follows:

  • 1-1:20 p.m., “China: An Economic Powerhouse,” Dr. Henry Hays
  • 1:25-1:45 p.m., “Imagining Democracy in China,” Dr. Richard Leitch
  • 1:50-2:10 p.m., “Introduction to Chinese Writing,” Dr. Lianying Shan
  • 2:15-2:35 p.m., “An Introduction to Chinese Instrumental Music,” Dr. Esther Wang
  • 2:40-3 p.m., “Images of China Among American Christians,” Dr. Sarah Johnson
  • 3:05-3:25 p.m., “Buddhism in China,” Dr. Jenkuan Shih
  • 3:30-3:50 p.m., “The 2008 Beijing Olympics: A Double-edged Sword for National Politics, Identity, and the Search for International Recognition,” Dr. David Tobaru Obermiller

Gustavus Global Insight is intended to allow students, faculty, and staff to focus on one country, region, or global issue during the academic year. This community project will involve invited speakers, fine arts events, special presentations, service learning opportunities, and class time dedicated to discussions of the focus topic.
