A group of Gustavus Adolphus College students that spent three weeks this winter in Ocean Springs, Miss., aiding in the clean-up and rebuilding efforts after Hurricane Katrina will give a public presentation in Wallenberg Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 15 about their trip and its impact to those receiving and those giving aid.
The students will share their experiences with the community through a public presentation that will include the unveiling of a participant-produced documentary film, photographic slideshows, and stories.
While in Mississippi, the 23 Gusties provided many services, including clearing houses to the bare structure, rebuilding homes, working in kitchens, distributing supplies, and working in pastoral care, child care, and medical clinics. The group was housed and fed in a “tent city” on the grounds of Christus Victor Lutheran Church. Led by Gustavus students who worked with faculty advisers, the project was coordinated through Lutheran Disaster Response.
This was one of several service opportunities that students took part in during the month of January. The service trip was financed with money from campus organizations and offices, a local church, and individuals.
