One of most powerful sacred works for string orchestra and quartet, Josef Haydn’s “The Seven Last Words of Christ,” will be presented as a candle light Lenten service in Christ Chapel on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus. The Gustavus String Orchestra will present this annual performance of Haydn’s masterwork at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 14.

Conducted and coached by Professor Warren Friesen, the Gustavus String Orchestra and six student string quartets from the Orchestra’s membership will present this powerful and moving work. The performance opens with chamber orchestra followed by scripture readings telling the story of Christ’s journey to the cross. Each reading is followed by a quartet from the Symphony.

This special Lenten presentation of “The Seven Last Words of Christ” is open to the public. There is no admission charge.
