Dr. Ashis Brahma, a doctor to Darfur refugees, will speak at Gustavus Adolphus College at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12 in Wallenberg Auditorium, located in the Alfred Nobel Memorial Hall of Science.
Brahma is a Dutch physician who has worked as the sole doctor at the Oure Cassoni refugee camp in eastern Chad, caring for 27,000 Darfur refugees forced from their homes in Sudan. Brahma has also spent time caring for the ill in developing countries like India, Nepal, Burundi, Uganda, and Ethiopia.
Brahma’s talk is titled “Darfur: Taking a Stand Against Genocide” and is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by the Gustavus Community Service Center and the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at the University of Minnesota.
It is estimated that more than 400,000 people in the Darfur region of Sudan have died due to the violence that began in 2003. Another two million people have been forced into primitive refugee camps like the one at Oure Cassoni.
