The hill was bustling with activity this past weekend as students, parents, staff, faculty, and alumni gathered on campus for an array of Homecoming and Family Weekend events, including class reunions, athletic events, educational seminars, and performances.
Several classes held alumni reunions on campus and attendance at those events was up this year according to Director of Alumni Relations Randall Stuckey.
“We had a great turnout this year,” Stuckey said. “Homecoming Weekend is a time for alumni to come back to Gustavus and reconnect with old friends.”
A standing room only crowd of 5,200 attended the Gustavus football game against the fourth ranked team in Division III from St. John’s University. It was a chance for many parents and alumni to see the new football stadium for the first time.
“Although the game didn’t turn out as we had hoped, it was a great day to showcase our new stadium that will be a part of Gustavus history for many years to come,” Athletic Director Al Molde said.
While the football game took center stage on Saturday afternoon, students and parents had a full schedule of activities to choose from during the weekend. Activities included educational seminars geared toward parents, tours of the arboretum, a family banquet, and performances by the Chicago Comedy Company, the Gustavus Choir, the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra, the Gustavus Wind Orchestra, the Lucia Singers, and the Vasa Wind Orchestra.
“Family weekend is a great opportunity for our students to show their parents what Gustavus is all about,” Director of Student Activities Megan Ruble said. “It’s a good mix of educational, athletic, and fine arts events.”
