Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biology Brenda Kelly has been named Interim Associate Provost and Dean of Sciences and Education at Gustavus Adolphus College. Kelly will assume the role vacated by Dr. Darrin Good, who was named Vice President of Academic Affairs at Whittier College earlier this month. Kelly will begin her 10-month tenure in the Provost’s Office in July.
“I am excited for Dr. Kelly to join the Provost’s Office during this time of transition,” Provost and Dean of the College Mark Braun said. “She is a respected colleague and will be a strong leader for the education, natural science, and social science divisions.”
Kelly holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Creighton University and her Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry from the University of Washington. At Gustavus, Kelly has taught courses in biochemistry, organic chemistry, and introductory chemistry. In her research laboratory, she and her students have explored scientific questions regarding the relationship between the structure of biological enzymes and their function. Currently, she is co-authoring a textbook on the science of cooking.
Most recently at Gustavus, Kelly has served the College as the chairperson of the Chemistry Department, a faculty representative on the College-wide Assessment Committee, and the Strategic Action Team. She was one of three faculty representatives on the Presidential Search Committee and has served for the past three years as one of two faculty members on an advisory committee to the College’s Office of Marketing and Communication.
