Gustavus Adolphus College will welcome two award-winning poets to campus on Thursday, March 21 for an evening of good poems and good company. Patricia Kirkpatrick and Tim Nolan will read a selection of their works beginning at 7 p.m. in the Melva Lind Interpretive Center.
Kirkpatrick received the first Lindquist & Vennum Prize for Poetry, established by Milkweed Editions, for her book Odessa. She is also the author of Century’s Road, poetry chapbooks, and other books for young readers. Her work has appeared widely in journals, including Prairie Schooner, Poetry, and Agni Online, and in anthologies, including Robert Bly in this World and She Walks in Beauty.
Kirkpatrick has taught graduate and undergraduate writing and children’s literature at Hamline University (1988-2012), Macalester College, and San Francisco State University. She served as poetry editor for the literary magazine Water-Stone Review for ten years (2001-2012). Her awards include grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Bush Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, the Minnesota State Arts Board, and the McKnight Foundation.
Nolan is a lawyer based in Minneapolis whose poems have appeared in The Gettysburg Review, The Nation, Ploughshares, Poetry East, and many other magazines. Nolan’s poems have also been read on National Public Radio by Garrison Keillor on The Writer’s Almanac. His first book of poems, The Sound of It, was published by New Rivers Press in 2008, and was a finalist for the Minnesota Book Award in poetry. His second book of poems, And Then, was published in 2012.
