The Gustavus Adolphus College Student Veterans Organization will host a screening of the documentary film When I Came Home at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19 in Wallenberg Auditorium, located in the Nobel Hall of Science.

When I Came Home addresses the issue of homeless veterans in the United States—from those who served in the Vietnam War to those returning from the Iraq War. The film looks at the challenges faced by returning combat veterans and the battle many must fight for the benefits promised to them. Through the story of Herold Noel, an Iraq War veteran suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and living in his car in Brooklyn, the film reveals a failing system and the veteran’s struggle to survive after returning from the war. The film won the New York Loves Film Documentary Award at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival.

The viewing of When I Came Home at Gustavus coincides with the Gustavus Student Veterans Organization’s fundraising drive in support of the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans and its efforts to end veterans’ homelessness in Minnesota. This event is free and open to the public and donations will be accepted.
