Alpha Sigma Tau, a national sorority will colonize at Gustavus Adolphus College beginning in the fall semester of 2012. The sorority will begin work on campus this spring by working with an already established interest group and implementing the beginning stages of a marketing plan.
“Gustavus Adolphus College is a great fit for Alpha Sigma Tau. I am continually impressed by the caliber of student, the support of the College by faculty, staff, and administration, and the opportunities for students to be involved in the campus and community,” said Gretchen Stahl, recruitment and extension coordinator for the sorority. “I am also extremely excited as Alpha Sigma Tau extends for the first time in the state of Minnesota.”
Alpha Sigma Tau was founded Nov. 4, 1899 at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich. The purpose of Alpha Sigma Tau is to promote the ethical, cultural, and social development of its members. The sorority offers membership programming with an emphasis on academic achievement, community service, leadership development, and personal growth opportunities.
Alpha Sigma Tau will become the second national sorority at Gustavus, joining Sigma Sigma Sigma which first came to the College in 1998. Gustavus is also home to a chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, a national fraternity. Fraternities and sororities have existed at Gustavus since the early 1900s, and while not recognized nationally many Greek groups on campus have rich histories.
