Award-winning author and University of Minnesota professor Patricia Hampl will appear at Gustavus Adolphus College on Thursday, Oct. 13 to read from several of her works. Hampl will speak at 7:30 p.m., in Alumni Hall, located on the upper level of the O.J. Johnson Student Union.
Hampl’s most recent book, The Florist’s Daughter, was honored with the 2008 Minnesota Book Award for Memoir and Creative Nonfiction and was also included on the New York Times’ “100 Notable Books of the Year” list. Her 2006 work, Blue Arabesque: A Search for the Sublime, was also a Times notable book. Hampl first won recognition for A Romantic Education, her memoir about her Czech heritage, which was awarded a Houghton Mifflin Literary Fellowship Award.
Hampl is also the author of two collections of poetry including Woman Before an Aquarium and Resort and Other Poems. In addition, I Could Tell You Stories, her collection of essays on memory and imagination, was a finalist in 2000 for the National Book Critics Circle Awards in General Nonfiction.
Besides being awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 1990, Hampl has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, Bush Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Ingram Merrill Foundation, and Djerassi Foundation.
Hampl is Regents Professor and McKnight Distinguished Professor at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, where she teaches in the MFA program of the English Department. She is also a member of the permanent faculty of the Prague Summer Program at Western Michigan University.
