Kevin Byrne Named Associate Provost and Dean of the Faculty

On Wednesday, July 20, Provost and Dean of the College Mark J. Braun announced that Dr. Kevin Byrne had accepted the one-year position of Associate Provost and Dean of the Faculty at the College.

On Wednesday, July 20, Provost and Dean of the College Mark J. Braun announced that Dr. Kevin Byrne had accepted the one-year position of Associate Provost and Dean of the Faculty at the College.

Byrne joined the Gustavus faculty in 1971 as a member of the History Department, and recently retired from teaching at the conclusion of the 2010-11 academic year.

“I am very pleased that Kevin Byrne has agreed to join our staff as Associate Provost and Dean of the Faculty for the coming academic year,” said Provost and Dean of the College Mark Braun. “Dr. Byrne brings to the position forty years experience as a respected Gustavus professor, department chair, program director, and associate dean. The Gustavus faculty, staff, and students will be well served by his contributions in the coming year.”

Byrne holds a B.A. from Providence College and earned his M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke University. During his tenure in the Gustavus History Department, he specialized in 20th century U.S. history including courses such as America and the Vietnam War, Recent U.S. History since 1945, and New Deal America. Byrne is also a past recipient of the Edgar M. Carlson Award for Distinguished Teaching.

He edited a book titled Responsible Science: The Impact of Technology on Society, and collaborated in the production of A Handbook of American Military History: From the Revolutionary War to the Present. Byrne also edited the Magazine of History for the Organization of American Historians for two years.
