The Gustavus Adolphus College forensics team opened its 2010-11 season with a strong showing at the first and second Mid-American Forensics League (MAFL) Tournaments on Sept. 25-26 in Illinois.
In the first MAFL tournament at North Central College in Naperville, Ill., Gustavus placed fourth in the team sweepstakes, finishing behind only Bradley University, Illinois State University, and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Junior Chloe Radcliffe took top honors in Drama and added a third place finish in Program Oral Interpretation. Senior Phil Helt placed fourth in Informative Speaking, while senior Claire Sagstuen took fifth place in Impromptu Speaking.
In the second MAFL tournament at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill., Gustavus placed third in the team sweepstakes behind only Bradley University and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Radcliffe earned a pair of second place finishes in Program Oral Interpretation and Prose respectively. Radcliffe also added a fourth place showing in Drama. Sagstuen placed fifth in both Impromptu Speaking and Extemporaneous Speaking. Other impressive individual performances included sophomore Kate Bissen’s second place finish in Impromptu Speaking, sophomore Hannah Engel’s seventh place finish in After Dinner Speaking, and first-year student Kelsey Abele’s seventh place finish in Program Oral Interpretation.
“The team had a great start to the season,” Director of Forensics Kristofer Kracht said. “These were highly competitive tournaments that featured several top 20 American Forensic Association Schools including Bradley University, Illinois State University, Northwestern University, and Concordia College.”
The team will continue its season this weekend when it travels to South Dakota State University for the SDSU Jackrabbit Jousts on Oct. 1-2.
