The Gustavus Adolphus College women’s tennis team is set to take on defending National Champion Williams College in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship at 1 p.m. Central Time Tuesday, May 25 Fredericksburg, Virginia. Gustavus enters as the No. 8 seed with an overall record of 33-10, while Williams, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, enters with an overall record of 20-3.
Gustavus made the NCAA Tournament for the 22nd consecutive year this season, while the Ephs are playing in their 17th straight NCAA Tournament. Gustavus is 32-23 in NCAA Tournament play, as Williams is 43-13. The Ephs have won the National Championship two consecutive seasons (2008, 2009), and have currently won 12-straight NCAA Tournament matches.
Gustavus is coming into the match on a 16-match winning streak, the longest win streak of any team in the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Gusties defeated UW-Whitewater 5-0 on Saturday, May 15 in the NCAA Midwest Region Final to move on to the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Ephs edged Tufts University 5-4 in their region final on Sunday, May 16.
Tuesday’s match will be the fourth meeting between the two squads in NCAA Tournament play. Williams holds a 2-1 advantage over Gustavus, as the last meeting ended in a 5-4 Ephs victory back in 1999.
The winner of the match will move on to face the winner of the Chicago (22-3) vs. Pomona-Pitzer (16-3) on Wednesday at 2:00pm.
