Basketball Teams Sit Atop the MIAC

At the midway point of the winter sports season, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams currently sit atop the standings in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

At the midway point of the winter sports season, both the Gustavus men’s and women’s basketball teams currently sit atop the standings in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The men’s team is alone in first place in the conference with a perfect 8-0 record. The Gusties upset No. 5 ranked St. Thomas, 56-51 on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at Gus Young Court. The win snapped the Tommies 28-game regular season conference win streak. Gustavus sophomore Seth Anderson had 17 points in the victory to lead all scorers.

The women’s team is currently tied for first place in the MIAC with St. Benedict at 8-1. The team improved to 10-2 overall on Jan. 13 when they defeated St. Thomas 77-63 as junior Molly Mathiowetz scored 22 points and recorded six steals.

Both teams will be in action this Saturday, Jan. 16 at Bethel University in Arden Hills. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. with the men’s game to follow at 3 p.m.
