Gustavus Adolphus College is ranked No. 77 on U.S. News & World Report’s 2017 Best National Liberal Arts Colleges list, which was released on Tuesday, Sept. 13. This is two spots higher than Gustavus placed in the publication’s 2016 rankings, when the College was ranked No. 79 among liberal arts colleges.

“Our inclusion on the list recognizes that Gustavus equips students to lead purposeful lives through a supportive and hands-on learning environment,” President Rebecca M. Bergman said. “I encourage interested high school students to visit campus and see for themselves how a student-centered, residential college like Gustavus can prepare them to lead a fulfilling personal and professional life.”

U.S. News & World Report has been publishing college rankings since 1985 and is widely considered to be the most respected resource for parents and prospective students when it comes to such rankings. The U.S. News methodology is based on several key measures of quality including graduation and retention rates (22.5%), assessment of excellence (22.5%), faculty resources (20%), student selectivity (12.5%), financial resources (10%), graduation rate performance (7.5%), and alumni giving (5%).

A total of 239 liberal arts colleges are included in this year’s list. The top schools are ranked one through 174, while another 65 schools are listed alphabetically under the label “Second Tier” schools. The entire list and accompanying data can be found online at usnews.com/rankings.

The College was also named to the U.S. News list of A+ Schools for B Students, which comprises schools who admit a meaningful proportion of applicants who average test scores between 20 and 30 on the ACT and 50 percent of whom are not in the top 10 percent of their graduating class. Incoming Gustavus students average a 27 composite score on the ACT and a 3.61 high school grade point average.
