Commencement Recap: 587 Graduates Receive Degrees

Five hundred eighty-seven Gustavus Adolphus College students received their bachelor’s degrees during a 2 p.m. ceremony on Sunday, May 29.

grad16Rain avoided the Gustavus Adolphus College campus on Sunday afternoon, resulting in beautiful weather for the 2016 commencement exercises at Hollingsworth Field. Five hundred eighty-seven students received their bachelor’s degrees during the 2 p.m. ceremony.

Senior Delaney Sweet of Omaha, Neb., gave the commencement address on behalf of the graduating class. Victoria L. Sowa was presented with the R. John Van Deusen Award for overcoming extraordinary adversity on the path to her college degree. Dr. Eric Carlson, professor of history, received the 2016 Edgar M. Carlson Award for Distinguished Teaching.

Out of the Class of 2016, 35 students graduated with summa cum laude honors (over 3.900 cumulative GPA), 105 graduated magna cum laude (cumulative GPA of 3.7-3.89), and 121 graduated cum laude (cumulative GPA of 3.5-3.69).
