Commencement Recap: 553 Graduates Receive Degrees

Rain forced Gustavus Adolphus College commencement exercises indoors on Sunday, June 1, but that didn’t dampen the mood on campus as 553 seniors received their degrees inside Lund Arena.

Gusties 14Rain forced Gustavus Adolphus College commencement exercises indoors on Sunday, June 1, but that didn’t dampen the mood on campus as 553 seniors received their degrees inside Lund Arena.

Forty two members of the Class of 2014 graduated Summa Cum Laude, meaning their cumulative grade point averaged was 3.900 or above. Ninety six students graduated Magna Cum Laude with a cumulative grade point average between 3.700 and 3.899. Another 108 students graduated Cum Laude with a cumulative grade point average between 3.500 and 3.699.

Seniors Victoria Clark and Valentina Muraleedharan delivered this year’s commencement address. Clark, a native of St. James, Minn., graduated with a degree in English. Muraleedharan, a native of Tlokweng, Botswana, will graduate with a double major in communication studies and gender, women, and sexuality studies.

This year’s graduating class also includes includes James Trevathan, a Goldwater Scholarship winner and a Rossing Physics Scholar. Alyssa Tinklenberg, the recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, earned her degree in public accounting. The class also includes Laurel Boman, Ava Goepfert, and Megan Wika, who all graduated Summa Cum Laude and were featured on the Gustavus website for their academic work during the past year.

Associate Professor of Classics Matt Panciera received this year’s Edgar M. Carlson Award for Distinguished Teaching.
