The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s soccer team earned a spot in the Division III NCAA Tournament on Saturday by defeating Carleton in a shootout in the MIAC Playoff Championship. The game was decided by penalty kicks after the two teams went scoreless for 90 minutes of regulation and two ten minute overtime periods.
Each team scored on their first six penalty kicks during the shootout, but the Gusties were able to record the victory on the seventh attempt. Gustavus senior Zach Brown found the back of the net on his attempt and then sophomore goalkeeper Brett Ylonen was able to deflect Carleton’s seventh attempt wide of the goal to give the Gusties the win.
The team will face the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10. Visit the Gustavus Athletics website for more detailed information.
