Two Gustavus Professors Included in Best 300 Professors Book Posted on April 3rd, 2012 by

Professor of Biology John Lammert and Associate Professor of Political Science Richard Leitch are both included in the Princeton Review’s latest publication, The Best 300 Professors. The book was published on Tuesday, April 3, and profiles 300 outstanding professors at 122 colleges across the country.

The Princeton Review teamed up with RateMyProfessors.com to create what it is calling the first comprehensive guidebook to America’s top undergraduate professors. The 300 professors were selected based on qualitative and quantitative data from survey findings and ratings collected by both organizations. After forming a base list of 1,000 professors, The Princeton Review obtained further input from school administrators and students to assist editors in making the final choices of which professors to profile in the book.

John Lammert

“We developed this project as a tribute to the extraordinary dedication of America’s undergraduate college professors and the vitally important role they play in our culture, and our democracy,” Princeton Review’s Senior VP/Publisher Robert Franek said. “One cannot page through this book without feeling tremendous respect for the powerful ways these teachers are enriching their students’ lives, their colleges, and ultimately our future as a society.”

Lammert has taught at Gustavus since 1982. His areas of expertise include microbiology and immunology. In his profile in The Best 300 Professors, a former student describes him as “one of the few profs who will follow a student throughout their college career and is interested in them as a person, not just a student.” Another student commented that “the man knows everything. It’s unbelievable.” Lammert was the 1988 recipient of the Edgar M. Carlson Award for Distinguished Teaching at Gustavus.

Richard Leitch

Leitch has taught at Gustavus since 1996. His areas of expertise include international relations, comparative politics, Asian politics, and environmental politics. He is well known on campus for teaching the First Term Seminar class on the Politics of Homelessness. In his profile in the new book, a former student says that “he teaches a lot of information every lecture, but he makes learning very fun.” Another student said that “he is always thoroughly prepared for the day’s interactions yet prepared to stray wildly from the plan if situations merit a different learning style is more appropriate.” Leitch received the student-selected Swenson-Bunn Award for Teaching Excellence in 2000 and the Edgar M. Carlson Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2008.

I was a young biology student at Gustavus in the early 80’s when Dr. Lammert arrived at Gustavus. He was an amazing professor from the beginning! I am thrilled to be sending my son to Gustavus in the fall; as a biology major, he will have the opportunity to learn from Dr. Lammert as well.
