After a national search that yielded a large and strong pool of candidates, Gustavus Adolphus College Provost and Dean of the College Dr. Mark Braun is pleased to announce that Dr. Darrin Good and Dr. Paula L. O’Loughlin will be joining his staff beginning in July 2012.
Dr. Good will assume the role of Associate Provost and Dean of Sciences and Education, while Dr. O’Loughlin will assume the role of Associate Provost and Dean of Arts and Humanities. The hiring of Dr. Good and Dr. O’Loughlin is part of a planned transition to permanent academic deans at the College. Dr. Good and Dr. O’Loughlin will succeed the current deans, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science Barbara Kaiser and Professor Emeritus of History Kevin Byrne.
“Both Dr. Good and Dr. O’Loughlin have proven themselves by rising through the ranks and taking on positions of leadership at their current institutions,” Provost Braun said. “We are pleased that they will be joining us at Gustavus, and look forward to the many contributions they will make to our academic programs as deans and associate provosts.”
Dr. Good has served on the faculty in the biology department at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., since 1995. He was granted tenure in 2000 and was promoted to full professor in 2009. Dr. Good chaired the Division of Natural Sciences, representing and supervising six departments with 16 majors, 10 pre-professional programs, and 48 faculty members from 2007 to 2010. He has served as Director of Service Learning and Leadership Initiatives since 2010 and Director of Summer Academic Programs since 2009. He has been director of the Nicaragua Medical Service Learning Program since 2006 and has chaired the Governing Board of the Pre-Health Professions since 2004. Dr. Good has taught on Augustana’s Latin American Term and was inducted into Phi Beta Delta, the International Education Honor Society. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Augustana, and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in biology from the University of Kansas.
Dr. O’Loughlin has served on the faculty in the political science department at the University of Minnesota, Morris since 1996. She was granted tenure in 2002 and promoted to full professor in 2009. She has served as founding director of the Academic Center for Enrichment since 2007 and was assistant to the Dean and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs from 2001 to 2005. She has served as political science discipline coordinator since 2000 and coordinator of Women’s Studies from 2005 to 2009. She also chaired the university’s Retention Work Group from 2001 to 2005. She has received numerous teaching honors including the prestigious Horace T. Morse University of Minnesota Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education (2007), the all-University John Tate Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising (2001), and the University of Minnesota, Morris Alumni Association Teaching Award (2001). Dr. O’Loughlin holds a bachelor’s degree in government from Smith College and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Good and Dr. O’Loughlin will work closely together and with department chairs and faculty to oversee and advance the work of academic programs in their area, including oversight of budget and hiring. They will also be responsible for general education programs, academic advising and disability services, Title IX coordination, and student academic issues.
