Poetry Reading to Feature Angela Shannon

Gustavus Adolphus College will welcome Minnesota author and poet Angela Shannon to campus for a poetry reading on Thursday, Feb. 23. Shannon will read from her selection of poems between 7-9 p.m. in the Melva Lind Interpretive Center.

Gustavus Adolphus College will welcome Minnesota author and poet Angela Shannon to campus for a poetry reading on Thursday, Feb. 23. Shannon will read from her selection of poems between 7-9 p.m. in the Melva Lind Interpretive Center.

Shannon teaches creative writing, college writing, and poetry at Bethel University where she is an assistant professor of English. She is best known for her book of poetry, Singing the Bones Together, which was a 2004 Minnesota Book Awards finalist.

Shannon was born in Oklahoma and raised in Tampa, Fla. After a decade of living and writing in Chicago, she moved to Minneapolis with her husband, poet and Star Tribune theater critic Rohan Preston. Her poetry has been published in TriQuarterly, Ploughshares, and other magazines. Her choreopoem, Root Woman, premiered at the Fleetwood-Jourdain Theater in Evanston, Ill., in 2001. She has received a poetry fellowship from the Illinois Arts Council and a Mentor Award from The Loft in Minneapolis. Shannon holds a bachelor’s degree in theater from Florida State University and a master’s in fine arts from Warren Wilson College in North Carolina.
