Vince Thomas, Internship Director in Gustavus Adolphus College’s Center for Servant Leadership, is the recipient of WCCO Radio’s Good Neighbor Award for his volunteer work at Minneapolis South High School.
Thomas turned in more than 100 volunteer hours during the 2010-11 school year, assisting South High students with college admission and scholarship applications.
Thomas worked with more than a dozen students, many of whom were African immigrants and first-generation college students.
Thomas also worked with a handful of other students, assisting them with the writing of their first resumes for summer jobs. He also made a presentation to a ninth grade English class regarding law as a career.
“I view my work in the South High College and Career Center as the most rewarding volunteer work I’ve ever done,” Thomas said. “The students I served were an inspiration to me. It was difficult to say goodbye to them in June, even though I knew they were going off to college as they had hoped.”
Thomas was nominated for the award by AchieveMpls, a non-profit organization that supports Minneapolis Public Schools. He was recognized on the WCCO airwaves (830 on the AM dial) on Friday, Oct. 28 at approximately 7:52 a.m., 12:40 p.m., and 5:50 p.m.
