Gustavus Adolphus Collge alumnus Eric Butorac ’03 and doubles partner Jean-Julien Rojer won their first round match at the U.S. Open in New York on Wednesday, Aug. 31.
Butorac and Rojer defeated Grigor Dimitrov and Dmitry Tursunov 6-7, 6-2, and 6-0 to advance to the second round.
Butorac and Rojer are seeded No. 8 at this year’s U.S. Open – the highest seed they have received at a Grand Slam event (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open).
Butorac and Rojer will face the tandem of Sergiy Stakhovsky of the Ukraine and Mikhail Youzhny of Russia in their second round match. The match will be played on Friday, Sept. 2 at the earliest.
Butorac is also entered in the mixed doubles draw, where he will play with fellow American Coco Vandeweghe. Butorac and Vandeweghe are scheduled to face the No. 8 seeded duo of Gisela Dulko and Eduardo Schwank in the first round.
Butorac is currently ranked as the No. 17 doubles player in the world – the highest ranking of his professional career. He has won 11 doubles titles in his career on the ATP Tour.
