Stacey Lindell, a 2000 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College, is starring in the Minneapolis premiere of the Broadway musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. The show will be performed by the Minneapolis Musical Theatre (MMT), at the Illusion Theatre on the eighth floor of the Hennepin Center for the Arts, June 10-26.
Lindell, who earned her bachelor of arts degree in communication studies, plays the role of Christine Colgate, a young American heiress traveling in the French Riviera, who is targeted by two hapless con men in a comical series of schemes and double crosses. This marks Lindell’s eighth role with Minneapolis Musical Theatre.
Based on the popular 1988 MGM film starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels centers on two con men living in the French Riviera – the suave and sophisticated Lawrence Jameson, who makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money; and a small-time crook named Freddy Benson, who, more humbly, swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother’s failing health. After meeting on a train, they unsuccessfully attempt to work together only to find that this small French town isn’t big enough for the two of them. So they make a bet: the first one to swindle $50,000 from a young heiress triumphs and the other must leave town. What follows are a series of schemes, masquerades, and double-crosses in which nothing may never be exactly what it seems.
“Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is one of the smartest and funniest shows that Broadway has seen in the past few years. MMT’s audiences are going to be transported to the French Riviera for a night of music, dancing, and high society high jinks that will leave them roaring with laughter,” Director Lori Maxwell said.
Minneapolis Musical Theatre is dedicated to providing community access to high quality, affordable works of musical theatre that have never or rarely been performed in the Twin Cities. Founded in 1992 originally as a touring troupe, MMT presented its first full season of musicals in the Twin Cities in the 2000-2001 season. It has produced over 40 musical productions, including an impressive 22 area premieres, to significant critical and audience acclaim.
