Diversity Awards Banquet May 14 Posted on May 5th, 2011 by

Gustavus students and staff pose at last years Diversity Awards Banquet.

Gustavus Adolphus College will host its annual Diversity Awards Banquet at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 14 in Alumni Hall, located in the O.J. Johnson Student Union.

The banquet is a collaborative effort between the Diversity Center and students to recognize and highlight the dedication of Gustavus faculty, staff, students, and student organizations in creating a socially just and oppression free environment.

“It’s the only event that raises awareness specifically about the work that is being done on campus,” said Director of Mulitcultural Programs Virgil Jones. “It honors the people doing the work, but it also reminds us that we have a lot more work to do.”

Awards will be given to a faculty/staff member, two senior students, and a student organization for their commitment to improving climate and cultural awareness on campus as it relates to race, gender, class, sexual orientation, political diversity, religion, ability, and other historically marginalized groups.

Individuals being honored this year will be Associate Professor of Psychology Marie Walker, senior English major Kristy Proctor, and senior health fitness major Maya Jayawardena. PASO (Pan Afrikan Student Organization) and their African Night will be honored as well for the second consecutive year.

Doors open at 6 p.m., dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., with dancing to follow from 8-11 p.m. Tickets are required for this event and can be purchased for $10 apiece in the Diversity Center until Friday, May 6.
