Paul Magnuson Student Leadership and Service Awards Announced

Four students, one student organization, and five student-led events were recognized Tuesday, May 3 at the annual Paul Magnuson Student Leadership and Service Awards Program at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Four students, one student organization, and five student-led events were recognized Tuesday, May 3 at the annual Paul Magnuson Student Leadership and Service Awards Program at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Established in 1991, and annually supported by the Hon. Paul Magnuson ’59, chief judge of the U.S. Federal District Court in St. Paul and former trustee of the College (1986-1993), the awards recognize the significant contributions that individual students and student groups make to campus life.

Each year, outstanding students, organizations, and events are nominated by fellow students, faculty, administrators, or staff for recognition. A selection committee assembled by the Dean of Students reviews nominations and determines honorees in the three categories.

The following students, organizations, and events were recognized this year:

Mayanthi P. Jayawardena – A senior health fitness major and the 2009-10 co-chair of Building Bridges, Maya is also involved with Gustavus Meditation, Pan Afrikan Student Organization, and Big Partner/Little Partner.

Justin C. Lund – A senior health education and physical education major, Justin is a three-year Collegiate Fellow, a member of M-PACT, and captain of the track and field team.

Ellen S. Miller – A junior religion major, Ellen is involved in Gustavus Youth Outreach, Building Bridges, Crossroads, Womyn’s Awareness Center, and Student Senate.

Lacey L. Squier – A senior communications studies major and Spanish minor, Lacey has contributed much of her extra time toward the betterment of the Gustavus campus. Lacey serves as co-president of the Campus Activities Board.

Campus Activities Board – CAB enriches the campus life experience by encouraging the involvement of all students in entertainment that is engaging and enjoyable.

African Night – A celebration to raise awareness of African culture, music, food, and clothing.

Building Bridges Conference – The Building Bridges Conference allowed for a dialogue with the greater community on the topic of slavery and human trafficking.

Delta Phi Omega’s Breast Cancer Benefit – The 12th annual event raised more than $16,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

“It Gets Better” Project – The project promoted awareness of the LGBT community by creating videos that share stories and messages of hope from more than 50 Gustavus students and staff.

“Take Back the Night”: A Stand Against Sexual Assault – Attended by more than 500 people, this event held in March presented a united front against sexual assault and started the healing process on campus.
