Poet and Gustavus professor emeritus John Rezmerski will return to campus for a poetry reading Thursday, March 10, 2011. He will present a reading from his new book of poetry, Breaking the Rules. at 7 p.m. in the Melva Lind Interpretive Center. This event is free and open to the public.
Rezmerski was a professor in the Department of English at Gustavus from 1967–2002. He received a bachelor’s degree from Gannon University and a master’s degree from John Carroll University. His works consist of 20 books, a screenplay, three plays, and more.
Professor Rezmerski has read his poetry and performed for a variety of audiences in schools, libraries, clubs, festivals, fairs, and coffee houses, as well as on television and radio. He currently serves as poet laureate for the League of Minnesota Poets. He has received many accolades for his writing, including the Devins Award and the Rhysling Award.
His new book of poetry, Breaking the Rules, is a collection of 107 ghazals (poems) and quasi-ghazals with an introductory essay on the rules of writing ghazals and why he is intent on breaking them.
