Over the past five years, Gustavus has developed into a leading educational institution in the state of Minnesota when it comes to speech. Often competing against large Division I universities, the Gustavus forensics program has earned a top 20 national ranking in each of the last three years. The team recently won the Pi Kappa Delta National individual events national championship. The team is also the three-time defending Minnesota Collegiate Forensics Association State Champions.

Forensics Head Coach Kristofer Kracht also founded the Gustavus Summer Speech Institute for students in grades 9-12 to hone their competitive speech skills. Sixty-nine students from six different states attended the 2009 Summer Speech Institute.
